Sponsor a Freedom Rider

Bring a 1961 Freedom Rider back on the bus.

In 1961, violence in Alabama stopped the Freedom Riders from riding into New Orleans. The original riders had to be flown there, and the Nashville students who took up the Ride were jailed in Mississippi. This October, we want them on the bus as we ride into New Orleans together.

By “original Freedom Riders,” we mean everyone who joined the Rides that summer, not only the first thirteen. The Riders featured on our Freedom Riders page are just some of those who will join us. Many more are ready to come, and each sponsorship brings another one onto the bus.

What a sponsorship covers

$6,000 brings one Freedom Rider, with a companion to care for them, on all twelve days

Travel, hotel and meals for the Rider and companion

A $1,000 stipend honoring the Rider’s time and witness

Give any amount

You don’t have to give the full $6,000 yourself. Gifts of any size are pooled with other donors’ gifts until each Rider’s $6,000 is met. Individuals, families, congregations and organizations can sponsor a Rider on their own or share a sponsorship with others.

Be recognized, or give quietly

Sponsors can be publicly thanked for bringing a Freedom Rider onto The Ride, or remain anonymous. If you or your organization ride with us, you’ll be on the journey together with the Freedom Rider you helped bring.

Tax-deductible

Gifts are made to Greater Things, a 501(c)(3) foundation that is one of The Ride’s organizing organizations and its fiscal sponsor. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

In 1961 the Riders asked only for a seat on the bus. In 2026, you can give them one.
